Welcome to this journey of the Seven Laws of Huna. This is the third law. Energy flows where attention goes. And this one is critical for us as artists. Now, we’ve all known that this law is true. When we focus our undivided attention on something, we succeed. When we’re in the studio painting, when we’re in the rehearsal hall rehearsing, when we focus our undivided attention on something, we succeed. When our attention is divided, we tend to flounder, we tend to struggle, and we don’t have that immediate success. When I have times of single minded focus on creating something, it feels to me like the universe is with me. I seem to find all the resources that I need. I seem to have all the energy I need. I’m in flow and when I have a clear goal, and my focus, and my attention is on that goal, it seems like the universe is conspiring with me to achieve it. I can feel my subconscious mind helping me to make all the connections I need, to make and achieve the goal in record time.
Now, it is very common that artists have come to work with us because they’re struggling. They’re focusing on too many things so their energy is all dispersed. It’s all over the place and they’re not having the success they need, right? If you’ve got 10 things on the go, it is impossible to achieve all ten. Now, the biggest help that we give to artists in this situation is to help them pick up the four things to focus on. And we encourage those to be focusing on things that are gonna earn, bring in the money.

Now, another important lesson of this law, energy flows where attention goes, is that we can learn to control our attention. Believe me, you can. Many artists, many artists suffer from the shiny object syndrome. Uh, what’s that? uh! oh wait, what? sorry? And we take our attention away from where it needs to be. Now that Kahuna that I worked with gave me the analogy of watering a seedling and he said, okay, John Paul while you’re watering the seedling and then you look over there, and then you put it down. Well, what’s gonna happen to the seedling? So he said, think of your energy as the water that you’re pouring.

So, the final lesson that I’d like to share with you is to connect this third law to the first two. It goes like this, law number one. If the world is what you think it is, law number two, and there are no limits and everything is possible, and law number three, now you realize that energy flows where attention goes, it makes sense. That if you want your life and your career to improve, you need to focus your attention on what you want rather than what you don’t want. So the action for this week is, just be focused. When you feel your attention drift, gently bring it back to what you wanna focus on, or perhaps just take a physical break. Learning to manage your attention is one of the most important things that we can master as artists. So, here are three challenges that I offer you to achieve better focus. Number one, focus your undivided attention on a limited set of actions or projects. Number two, instead of becoming great at everything, shower your attention on the things that matter most to you. And number three, develop your ability to focus by practicing meditation, sitting in stillness, focusing your attention on your breath. That’s what it takes to understand this third law, energy flows where attention goes.
