Hi. Craig Lambie here, the Chief IT Guru here at the Auspicious Arts Incubator bringing you another Hot Tip Tuesday. This week I want to share another great little trick on the computer to save you heaps of time. Favourites, make them.
Can you imagine if you could take the top five or 10 folders that you access regularly and find them really easily without clicking through to some deep place that you stored them and still have that organization and not have them moved from where they are? Let me show you. It’s called Favourites. It’s one of the best features. It’s on both Windows and Mac so it will work on your computer.
It’s pretty simple. On a Mac in the find a window and on a PC in the Windows Explorer window you will see at the very top a little area that is called Favourites. You can drag a folder in there without moving that folder from where it lives. It’s just a shortcut to getting there.
It’s very simple. This is how you do it on a Mac and this is how you do it on a PC. That’s it. You just drag it across. It’s really simple. Just drag those folders into the Favourites area. Just drag them out when you dont need them anymore.
Now that you’ve done that you can quickly access that folder from all the places that you need to and most places that you need to. Here at the top two most important places that you’re going to use it. Number one is when you’re opening a file. You’re going to open your finder window or Windows Explorer and go straight to that Favourites are because the top five things that you’re working on are right there so you’re going to get there really fast to that folder and open the right file. The folders are what’s in Favourites area.
The second most important time you’re going to use this is when you’re saving a new file. Say you open a Word document, you’re typing out a new thing. You hit save and it says oh, I want to save this in the last place that you save a file in Word. You go I dont want to save it there. I’m working on something completely different. Go to your Favourites area. It’s going to take you to the folder for the thing that you’re working on now. You’re going to save that new document into the correct folder not into the place that Word wants you to save it in a super quick shortcut way by hitting that folder in your Favourites area. That’s this week’s tip.
This has been another time saving tip based on the series that we created about from what you said you needed in the independent artists profile. You can click here to see a whole playlist of time saving tips that we put together for you. Have you got that time saving tip? If you have gone and added those Favourites because you’re going to learn and do go and do it then please like this video. If you know somebody that is gets a big frustrated and needs to save some time on their computer then please share this video with them.
Please tell me in the comments. I want to hear about your experience adding a Favourite and how it might have saved you some time or you think it will save you some time. Tell me about it in the comments. I’m here to have a conversation with you about saving time. Here at the Auspicious Arts Incubator we want you to more than survive we want you to thrive. In order to thrive you need to subscribe. I’ll see you next time.
ok, first question… my Mac doesnt have the word ‘favourite’ anywhere.
by the way… Good Morning Craig
Hi Joy – it should have it in the finder application – looks like
Let me know if you can find it.
Great tip Craig – I’ll start using it today and see how much easier it is to get to the important files I’m working on.
Cheers mate!
Glad you liked it – I guarantee it will improve your productivity if you use it.
HI. Just tried your tip and it works. I haven’t tried eth save mechanism for a new doc yet but I hope that works too. This will be great as a short term project time saver! Thanks… nanette
