Welcome to Hot Tip Tuesday. I’m John Paul Fischbach, the CEO and Chief Alchemist here at the Auspicious Arts Incubator, and this week, the topic is the emotion business. Now I know that you say that you are in the art business, but it’s not true, you’re in the emotion business. Your art is merely a vehicle for an emotional experience for yourself and for others. We transform emotion into a temporal and physical medium, that’s what we really do.
We are masters of harnessing emotion and creating emotion. We are masters of emotion through the vehicle of art. People are drawn to our work because of emotion. They unsell us and they come back because of an emotional experience, and you know that every single purchase that happens is an emotional decision. The decision to buy a ticket to your show, or buy a piece of your art, is also an emotional decision. So our job is to get better at understanding the emotional benefit that people get from our art.
Look, one of our grads, Sara Catena, realized that she’s a happiness catalyst. Her art creates the emotion of happiness. Her customers come to have an emotional experience of happiness. Well, sure, they like the lines, they like the colors, they like the style of her work, but they come back and they buy art because of the positive emotion that they experience.
So here’s a challenge, what emotion does your work generate? Or what emotion does your work provoke? It’ll be way easier for you to talk about your work and to sell it once you start to talk about the emotion that you and your art creates because you are in the emotion business. You’re not in the art business. You use art, you create art, for an emotional experience, and people want to buy the emotional experience.
