It’s not all about the money in the short term. There is a formula to determine if what you are creating is viable. It’s important to decide if this next venture is a good investment of your time, money and soul. You want to invest in “viable ideas”.

Hi. It’s John Paul Fischbach, the CEO and Chief Alchemist here at the Auspicious Arts Incubator with this week’s Hot Tip. This week the topic is viability. Oftentimes an artist comes to us and they say I just want to talk to someone to figure out whether this art idea I have or this artistic thing that I’m going to do is viable. It’s not just a question of money. We say that there is a viability formula. Our viability formula is passion plus market equals viable.

What I mean by that is do you have the passion to do this? Do you have the passion to create this art over and over again, do this activity, to provide this service over and over for the long haul? Do you want to keep doing it? Do you want to make this art? That plus the fact that there is a market for it. Have you tested it? Does anybody want this? Is there a market for the thing that you’re creating or this service that you’re providing?

If you still want to do it and there’s a market for it that’s a viable thing to be involved in. that’s it. Viability is not just will it make me any money. You’re going to be in here for the long duration. You’re in for the long haul. This is your life. This is what you do as an artist. Viability has to be your desire to do this plus a marketplace that wants it, needs it, is excited by it. If those two things exist it’s a viable thing. It may take a while. It may come in small doses but it’s absolutely viable if you want to do it and people want it from you. Think about that when you wonder gosh, is this idea actually viable?
