Hi. It’s John Paul Fischbach, the Chief Alchemist and CEO here at the Auspicious Arts Incubator and this week I want to talk to you about art in the time of disruption. This Tuesday I want to talk about the fact that we live in a profound time of disruption. The control and power over our success as artists has been totally disrupted. If you’re a writer you dont need the big publishing how anymore. If you’re a recording artist and a musician you dont need the record label anymore. If you’re a performing artist you dont need the theater venue to take you in. If you’re a visual artist you dont really need the galleries anymore so that is exciting. You have a choice. You can seek recognition and validation from the establishment or you can create your own arts business. You know where my preference lies.

If you’re going to spend your time and your energy on those established venues and the old guard you’re actually helping to build their business not yours. Think about it. Why is that gallery successful? Because your sexy art is on the wall. That’s why. People see your art they go to that cool gallery. They take another artist. They put their sexy work on the wall so you’re continually building their success. You’re building their business not yours. Think about that.

I love the phrase effectiveness is the measure of truth. Are you good artist? The answer isn’t because one of the gatekeepers says so. The answer lies in the effectiveness of you and the effectiveness of your art. Are you actually and is your art actually changing hearts, changing minds, changing lives. Are people seeing value in you and your art? If so that is your answer.

I accept that we are living in a time that is on influx. The powerful gatekeepers are continuing to dole out prizes and opportunity so go for it. Get those opportunities and prizes. Make a business and work with the establishment. Just be clear that if you follow the rules of the established galleries and publishers and record labels and theaters. You’re doing that to build cred, personal cred, not to make money and not to succeed with your business. Building cred reputation in those circles is good. It’s a good thing. You can also choose to create your own business. You can make the choice to start your own arts business to make money and take control of your success because you’re going to meet the needs of your customers. This happens because you get to know them. There’s no one keeping you and your customer from each other. It’s an exciting time for us. I encourage you to embrace the disruption, build your cred with the establishment and earn your money in your own arts business.
