John Paul Fischbach, Chief Alchemist here at the Auspicious Arts Incubator. Welcome to this week’s Hot Tip Tuesday. The theme this week the Lie of the Starving Artist. It’s been my experience over the last eight years or so that I’ve been working with independent artists that the biggest thing that separates successful artists from those who struggle is their mindset. 80% of your success is psychological. Here at the Incubator when we first meet an artist quite often they’re struggling. Our biggest challenge is to help them see that some of the struggle is because of obstacles in their minds and erroneous assumptions about the way the world works. They have unknowingly swallowed the lie of the starving artist.

It’s a two-faced demon that appears to us as a friend with experience and good counsel. One face asserts that pursuing a career as an artist leads to financial struggle. The other face upholds the romanticized notion that the art is better when it’s created in a state of deprivation. Both faces are lying and believing in either one of them will keep you from becoming a thriving working artist.

You know from your direct experience that success in your art practice comes from passion, talent and hard work. You also know that promoting your work means that people will know what you do and that they can connect the cool experience of your art back to the source of that cool experience you. You also know, I bet, that selling your work will support your livelihood and allow you to make more art. These are the thriving artist truth.

Artists who possess the mindset of a thriving artist rather than the mindset of a starving artist are not frightened by the notion of making money. We think in terms of possibility and abundance not limits and scarcity. We give ourselves permission to thrive so let’s get rid of that lie of the starving artist. Let’s not perpetuate that lie any further. Let’s be amazing, strong, working thriving artists.

If this Hot Tip was helpful please like the video. If you know someone else who has swallowed the lie of the starving artist please send this video along to them. Share the video. I’d love to start a bit of a conversation about where you’re at with this idea that money corrupts the art. I often say to artists no, stick to your guns. Make amazing art. You dont have to compromise to make money.

Let’s start a conversation about that below because here at the Auspicious Arts Incubator we want you to more than survive we actually want you to thrive and the best way to thrive is to subscribe. See you next week.
