It is a crazy belief that you need to work at something else to support your passion. It’s way easier and more sustainable to build a business around your passion. Running a business is hard and when the going gets tough it is the passion for the art that will carry you through and help you see the value. When you love what you do for a living you never work a day in your life.

Hi, I’m John Paul Fischbach. I’m the Chief Alchemist here at the Auspicious Arts Incubator. I welcome you to another Hot Tip Tuesday. The theme this week is Follow your Passion. Lots of artists come to us and they believe they have to create some sort of other business to have the life that they want. They have to create some sort of other business to fund their art. We absolutely say no. Every successful business owner will tell you: do what you love and love what you do.
Doing what you love will insure that you’ll never work a day in your life. One of the artists that we have the pleasure to work with is Trudy Rice. Trudy now does what she loves. She’s always loved being an artist and a print maker. Now that’s what she’s doing. She’s built the whole business around doing the thing that she loves the most because if you’re going to invest your time and your energy in creating a business find what you love, find that passion and make money from that. It’s way easier to bolt all the things that a business needs on to your passion because when the going gets tough it’s the passion for what you do and the love of your art that is going to carry you through the lean times, the troublesome times, the building, growth times of a small business it’s going to be way easier to find the energy to keep going if the business is the thing that you love and if the business is the thing that helps make your passion come alive.
That’s what Trudy found. She had to diversify some of her revenue. Sometimes she creates work that she sells and sometimes she exhibits work. Sometimes she creates work that gets printed, that gets sold. Sometimes she gets a commission for work from interior designers but all of the business is wrapped around the thing that she loves.
You can check out her video and meet her and find out more about what she does but that’s the idea I want you to get across. Follow your passion and build the business around that passion. Don’t create a business to fuel the passion, the passion is the fuel. Let that fuel work to power your business.
