This week, I’m gonna start us out on a sacred journey. Over the next seven Tuesdays, I’m gonna share the seven laws of the Huna.

I’m John Paul Fischbach. I’m the CEO and Chief Alchemist here at the Auspicious Arts Incubator. This week, the hot tip is the first law of Huna, “The world is what you think it is.” Now, when I was an apprentice to a medicine woman, she sent me off to work with a Kahuna in Hawaii, and he taught me these seven laws that I still use in my life and in my arts practice. So I wanna share them with you.

This week, I wanna introduce you to the law, “The world is what you think it is.” And for this week, I want you to take the action, be aware. Now, the reason this Huna law is so cool is it changes your world. What if your path as an artist creating work in that stressful environment that we live in could be more positive, more peaceful, more loving, and more compassionate? Well, it can. It’s not up to the circumstances of your life. It’s not up to someone else. It’s up to you. You have the power to change your thoughts. If you think, speak, and act positive, peaceful, loving, and compassionate, more will happen.

Being aware of how you act and react to everyday circumstances gives you a clear understanding of yourself and the people and environment that are around you. As you start to be more aware of how you react, what you say, what you think, you start to take responsibility for your thoughts, you take responsibility for your feelings, and you take responsibility for your actions. And you start to change things for the better, if you choose to. It’s your choice.

So the action for this week is to be aware. When things are stressful in your arts practice, when you’re up against deadlines, be aware of what’s working and what’s not working, and then change your thoughts, your words, the actions. If you want more positive, more peaceful, more loving, and more compassionate in your life and in your arts practice, well, there’s a trick. You have to become aware and make the choice to change your thoughts, your words, and your actions.

If you just simply, when the pressure’s on, start acting more peaceful, more loving, and more compassionate, you’ll be fine, as long as your circumstances are fine. But the moment something is unsettling, you’re going to revert to the thoughts, the feelings, and the action that you’ve always used to help you in these situations.

So please, embrace the sacred law of the Huna, “The world is what you think it is.” It’s not the first time that I’ve touched on this theme for artists, so try it out. Try it out. Be curious. Indigenous peoples have lived, knowing this for thousands of years, so maybe there’s something in it for you, too. Think that the world is generous and plentiful, and see how you speak and feel and act. Just be aware of this law in your life for this week. That’s what you need to do.
