But I can’t do this #HTipT #18

We often convince ourselves that our limits are immutable. NOT TRUE! Self-talk in the form of justification for non-action is dangerous. Re-frame the conversation you are having with yourself.

Hi I’m John Paul Fischbach, the Chief Alchemist here at the Auspicious Arts Incubator. Welcome to another Hot Tip Tuesday. This is the first of a little bit of a series we’re going to go into that deals with ‘self talk’. I want to talk to you first about a self talk trap. It’s a big trap that we have when we talk to ourselves. Let’s start with a question. Who is the person that you talk to the most? It’s yourself. We spend the most amount of time talking to ourselves than anyone else, and part of that self talk has a trap of justification.

Have you ever caught yourself, when saying to yourself “I can’t do this because I don’t have that”. You justify not doing anything not achieving this thing because you have some ‘thing’. That was my case. I was a very successful, am a very successful theatre director, and I wanted to move into film but I kept saying to myself in my self talk “I want to be a film director but I can’t because I don’t have any experience. I don’t have any runs on the board in film.” I created a whole bunch of that that kept me away from having this, being a film director.

Here’s the deal. When you catch yourself saying “I can’t do this because I don’t have that” go get it. Put it on your to do list. Become resourceful. They say it’s never a question of resources. It’s always a question of resourcefulness. What I would ask you to do is the next time you catch yourself saying “I can’t do this because I don’t have that.” Reframe that. Say “I want this so I better go get that”.

That’s what I did. I said “I want to be a film director” so I better get some film experience. Finally, just by reframing that self talk I was able to direct and write my first film, a little short film called ‘Shoelace’, about the day a five year old boy succeeds in tying his shoes. It’s now travelled around the world, 36 festivals. It just won the Best of the Festival award in New York but the key was changing that self talk, not getting caught in that trap of justification.

Now my film career is off and running. I’m soon to launch a comedy web series. It’s called Sex or Breakfast. All because I changed the conversation so the next time you hear yourself “I can’t do this because I don’t have that”. Reframe it. I want this so “I better go learn that, get that, find that, develop that”.
