Hi, I’m John Paul Fischbach. I’m the Chief Alchemist here at the Auspicious Arts Incubator. This Hot Tip Tuesday is about a little networking tip that I have for you. Networking is difficult for artists because some of us are a little bit introverted and we don’t really like that moving around and talking. We don’t even know what to say, so here’s a little tip. When someone comes up to you and says “What do you do?” The first thing that happens is this paralysis because we do too many things. As artists we’ve got a bunch of different things on the go so it’s difficult for us to pick one but that’s what you want to do. Pick only one thing.
We tend to spew out all of gems and that’s just too confusing. The person that’s listening to us they couldn’t possibly remember all the cool things that we’re doing, so just pick one.
Here’s the phrase. You say “Well, I’m an artist so I’m actually doing a lot of things but the thing that’s fascinating me right now is…” and pick one thing. Just talk about that one thing and then leave it. If they’re interested in that one thing they’ll ask you for more information and you can go into greater detail, but just pick one thing. One thing that is fascinating, one thing that is challenging, one thing that is wet in the studio, one thing that’s in rehearsal, one thing that’s development: but just pick one thing.
It’s that phrase “Hey, I’m an artist so I’ve got a lot of things on the go but the thing that is fascinating me right now is…” and mention that one thing. You’ll have a much easier time sharing rather than spilling all the gems.
