Hi. John Paul Fischbach here. CEO and Chief Alchemist of the Auspicious Arts Incubator with this week’s Hot Tip. If you honestly want to get ahead you have to start planning your week. Seriously you need to make a plan for the entire week. There’s a quote that I like, you’ll never get ahead of the game by only looking at today and never thinking about tomorrow.

When you have a show or an exhibition or a deadline you plan how you’ll get there dont you? It’s time to do that for your career. People who get things done become planning experts. They focus on the big picture. They keep the goal in mind. Planning your day and your week and your month, it isn’t a trap or a constraint it’s just a plan. You can change it. You can even deviate from course but you continue to make progress toward the goal.

If you can claim back one hour on Monday morning here’s an exercise that I borrowed from Cal Newport. He’s the guru of getting things done. Every Monday, lay out a plan for the week. Go through your to do list, your inbox, your calendar, get an overview and a reminder of what’s up. Then come up with the best thing to do each day for the week.

I write it as a heading for the day so that I see it and I’m reminded of the plan and what is important not just what is urgent. Research shows that you spend your time more wisely when you follow a plan. As artists we’re very busy. We achieve lots but we’re also the CEO of our business and we need to see the big picture and have a master plan. When there is a plan you can relax and be present and be creative knowing that your effort and your energy are heading you in the right direction.
